About Cluaran

Cluaran is a Wordsmith Crafts C.I.C. project.

What is Cluaran?

The vision of Cluaran is to provide a way for people (especially young people) to explore the rich and varied heritage of Dumfries and Galloway, and discover how these communities lived.

We do this by:

Supporting Historical Interpretation by accomplished and experienced professionals and volunteers. These people explain and interpret our ancient heritage using replica artefacts to create immersive experiences, demonstrate heritage crafts and run hands on workshops. We visit schools as well as arrange informal learning opportunities to suit a wide variety of audiences – including those online!

Hands on craft activity sessions include.

Providing opportunities for learning ancient methods of construction of everyday items that were used in bygone times like boat building, spinning, leatherwork etc. Not only can people learn old crafts, they can then help to maintain these historical techniques in the 21st century.

This includes Cluaran Craft Club! We suggest £5 an evening to contribute to workshop overheads. You can pay here via PayPal

Cluaran is also a boat !

The sea and maritime life was and is very important to our area. The Cluaran Ness Yole can be taken to schools and other events and provides opportunity for learning about the early and ongoing maritime story of our area. We have also built several skin boats so that people can learn about a wide range of boat building craft and about community life based around our coastline.

The Cluaran boat – clinker built and seaworthy
“Catken” built on the shores of Loch Ken as a community project, in use here for a school visit
